When factory should consider automtation assembly?
When considering the manufacture of a product, a company must take into account the many factors that affect the choice of assembly method. For a new product, the following considerations are generally important:
1. Suitablility of the product design
2. Production rate required
3. Availability of labor
4. Market life of the product
If the product has not been designed without automatic assembly in mind, manual assembly is probably the only possibility. Similarly, automation will not be practical unless the anticipated production rate is high. If labor is plenitiful, the degree of automation desirable will depend on the anticipated reduction in the cost of assembly and the increase in production rate, assuming the increase can be absorbed by the market. The capital investment in automatic machinery must usually be amoritized over the market life of the product. Clearly, if the market life of the product is short, automation will be difficult to justify.
A shortage of assembly workers will often lead a manufacturer to consider automatiic assembly when manual assembly would be less expensive. This situation frequently arises when a rapid increase in demand for a product occurs. Another reason for considering automation in a situation in which manual assembly would be more economical is for research and development purposes, wherer experience in the application of new equipment and techniques is considered desirable. Many of the early applications of assembly robots were conducted on this basis.
Following are some of the advantages of automation applied in appropriate circumstances:
1. Increased productivitiy and reduction in costs
2. A more consistent prouct with higher reliability
3. Removal of operators from hazardous operations
4. The opportunity to reconsider the design of the product
